How do I add my reading list?

There are four simple stages to putting your reading lists online. First you need to register so that we know at which university or college you teach. Next we will ask you for the details of the course. Then you can add books using our database of over a 2 million titles to find the ones you want. Finally just hit the save button and your list will then be created for your students to view. We hope we have created a web site that makes this easy. Email us on [email protected] for more detailed assistance.

How do I find my University or College?

Many Universities and Colleges have already been listed, which you can select from. However if your University or College is not listed then please let us know by contacting us at [email protected]

Why are some departments already listed?

We have been able to collect many department or school details directly from university data - which means that your department may already be present on the list. If not, please enter it in the box provided.

Why do you need my email address?

Your university email address doubles as your User ID, since it is unique to you and your institution. By asking you for this information each time you log in, we are able to verify all users and so prevent corrupt data being entered on to the site.

What details do you need and why?

For you to register with us we will need your Name, Email address, and telephone number. Your Email address is especially important as this will double up as your Username. We will only use your details to verify you as a registered user and provide you with copies of your reading lists. In addition we may email you at the start of the new academic year and in advance of the second semester to ask you if you wish to update your list.

Please note that your details will not be passed to a third party, nor will they be used for any other purposes within the Blackwell Group.

What should my user name be?

Your university email address doubles as your User ID, since it is unique to you and your institution. It will be automatically entered from the e- mail address you supplied us. You may have more than one user name if you teach at more than one institution.

What should my password be?

It need only have significance to you, so it can be anything - as long as you have a good chance of remembering it! It can contain letters in upper or lower case (it is case sensitive) and/or numbers and other characters. Your password must be at least six characters long.

When will my registration be confirmed?

You should receive an email from us in 3 or 4 working days confirming your registration and your lists will be live on the site for you to look at from this date. Once your registration is confirmed there will be no delay in your amendments and additions to your lists appearing on the reading lists site.

I've registered and entered a list but can't amend it. Why?

If it has been four days or fewer your registration and list have yet to be confirmed and authorized. You will receive an email to confirm that your registration and lists have been authorized. Once you have received this confirmation you will then be able to amend and add to your lists. If it is more than four days since you registered or that you are unable to amend your list after receiving the confirmation email please contact us at [email protected]

Should I register more than once?

Blackwell's Reading Lists allows you to create and edit reading lists for your registered faculty or school only. If you need to create lists for more than one faculty or school (or even different institutions) you will need to be registered more than once. If you teach in several different places and multiple user names are causing you problems please contact us and we will create a personal solution for you. Email us on [email protected]

What is the header data?

It is the non-bibliographic information attached to each reading list. It includes:

Module name and code
this information may already be present. Please check that it's correct - it is vital when locating reading lists. For consistency, please follow the existing format for module name and code if present.
Academic year, start month and terms, and student numbers
essential information for your library and your campus Blackwell's Bookshop. Module start dates and an approximation of student numbers help the library and the bookshop to have the right number of books on the shelves.
Student View Password
you can set a password here to password protect the list for student views.
Comments
this is your space to use as you wish. Most probably you'll use it for notes or a course introduction or additional information which may be of use to your students. You may wish to point out journals to read or suggest other websites to visit.

You can amend the header details without changing any of the book information on the list.

How do my students view list details?

If you are permitting students to view your lists a "Student View" URL is displayed on the list display page. Click on the the URL to preview the student view. You can email or otherwise pass the URL to your students, along with the list password if one has been set. This displays all list details including comments.

The URL is also included along with list details when these are emailed to you, either as a result of a list modification or because you have clicked on the "Email this list to me" button on the list display page.

You could also just forward the list email to your students.

How do I view or edit an existing list?

To view a list just click on the name of list you want to view. There you will be able to edit your list by adding or deleting books. You will also be able to update the module details if needed by clicking on "Update list header details".

How do I select and add a book to the reading list?

You can search our book database using the author or title keywords or ISBNs. Once you have found the book you require you must select a reading status. These are:

Essential
titles which are core to the module, and which you would expect every student to buy or have access to throughout the course.
Recommended
titles which are recommended for the course, but which you wouldn't expect every student to buy. Students often club together to buy recommended titles and there is often a high demand for them in the Library.
Background
titles which are not core to the course and which you would not expect students to buy. You would expect these books to be stocked in the Library.
Hidden
not displayed to students

You can then click on the' Add Selected Books' and the book will be added to your list. You will then be able to add specific information to your chosen titles such as

Dates
you must specifically select dates for when each book should be used from and to
Strength or Recommendation
you can change the importance of each book.
Comments
You can add specific comments for each book such as which chapters to read.

Once completed you can then save the book(s) to your lists. If you already know the ISBNs of the books you wish to submit, see next FAQ entry.

What is the quick add function?

If you already know the ISBN of the books you wish to submit, you do not need to search the book database - you can use the Quick Add Function. This allows you to submit up to five ISBNs, selecting the appropriate Reading Status for each one. These books will be automatically added to the reading list.

How do I return to the Reading list?

If you have finished searching for titles, or if you wish to amend the current list, simply click 'View List'.

What is an ISBN?

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It is an identification number for books, and is ten digits long (although sometimes the tenth is an X!) Every title, and every edition and binding of a title has a different ISBN, so it is the best way of differentiating the correct book (and edition and binding) you want. The ISBN can be found on the back cover above the bar code, and on the verso of the title page. Sometimes an ISBN is divided with dashes between some of the sets of numbers, however you do not need to type these when using an ISBN.

What if I cannot find the title I am looking for?

We pride ourselves in having the very best and latest data, however it is possible that the title that you are looking for does not appear on our database. If this is so please contact us at [email protected] and we will find the title for you. Please note that the Reading lists database is a book database only; it does not currently include journal Volumes.

Why is the price for my title not available?

The book may be sourced abroad and priced in a foreign currency or there may be another reason why the price is missing. If you want to check the price and availability before choosing the book for your list please contact our customer service team and we will obtain the latest information from the publishers. We also do not show prices for out of print books.

What if one of my titles is out of print?

Books can go out of print (no longer available for sale from the publisher) almost without notice. If you select a book for your reading list and it states that it is out of print, this will generally mean that your students will not be able to buy copies of this title. Of course the library may still have the older edition(s), but in small numbers. Sometimes the hardback will be out of print but the paperback will still be in print (and vice versa) or a newer edition may be available, so it is worth searching under the title without entering the ISBN to see if another edition is available. We are merely bringing the information to your attention, you can still choose an out of print textbook for your reading list although this will limit your students' access to this text. If you can find a newer edition to select then this is a benefit to everyone. If you cannot, then let us know and we will contact the publisher to find out if a new edition exists or is forthcoming.

What if one of my titles has not yet been published?

In order to give you the most complete information about books we include details of some titles which will be published within the next few months. A title labelled as 'Not Yet Published' is not yet available for your students to buy or to borrow from a library. If you contact us we can find out the expected publication date.
